Posted: 10 Oct 2010 Topic: So slow worms climb hedges - Iom amazed

Absolutely horrified today at killing an adult female slow worm in the garden. I cut the longer grass I leave at the edges of the lawn with wallpaper scissors to avoid killing the frogs, newts and slowworms in our garden and am as careful as i can be. The slowworm was 5 foot off the ground in the top of an ivy hedge that i was cutting with an electric hedge cutter. Sadly, I didn't react quickly enough.

My sister in law works for a charity that gives help to people who perhaps need help managing their homes. She has told me before about an old lady who to her neighbour's annoyance won't allow her hedges to be maintained as she claimed the slowworms climb up into them. I dismissed this - I wish I hadn't.

Today was the first time I've been at home in the morning since last Sunday's carnage. The six foot stretch of hedge the slow worm was on is the only spot in direct sunlight at 10.15 now that the sun is getting lower in the sky.

3rd one floated up today + 1 palmate newt. Maintained large saucepan shaped hole covered with polystyerene box for the second week of the fortnight the pond was covered in thick ice during December. Lots of palmate newts back in pond but can only see 1 live frog this week.

Posted: 13 Feb 2011 Topic: Frogs Spawning

2 clumps of spawn in my small garden pond this morning in Central bristol. At it again tonight. Only 8 frogs visible when in past years there has been between 40 - 60. Also spawning in local park tonight.

Earliest spawning in the last 7 years I've lived at the house was February 24th and more often in early March. I'm hoping more frogs turn up in a couple of weeks and the harsh December weather didn't crash the adult population.

3 more clumps this morning. Interestingly, they've used the smaller, shallower of my 2 ponds. In previous years they've shunned this pond. The water in the larger of the 2 ponds looks clear but smells ( like dead hidden frog corpses?! ) - I wonder if this has anything to do with the switch.

The frogs in my 2 ponds have spawned ( for the first time ) in the shallowest area of the smallest pond. This area receives sunlight in the morning. The other pond they usually spawn in is much deeper but receives more sunlight.

Interestingly, new frogs have turned up in the last couple of days that are now in amplexus ( presumably haven't spawned ) and are in the larger pond they usually spawn in. In previous years it's always 1 big fiesta on 1 night. This year it seems to be staggered.

( If I had the skills I would post photos )

Posted: 06 Mar 2011 Topic: a bad year for frogs and newts?

I'm in Central Bristol. The number of Palmate Newts in my garden ponds does not appear to have reduced. However, frog numbers have crashed in my ponds ( approx. 50-60 at spawning to 8 ) , there are no frogs in my neighbours pond and in the local pond numbers were definitely reduced. I've just visited the local park pond and found all the spawn has gone.
