Posted: 01 Jun 2007 Topic: Where am I going wrong???

Last year I rekindled my interest in snakes and managed to find two grassies, one mature, one little bootlace and two common lizards, all on the same site. It's a small reserve (9 hectares) in East Hertfordshire. This year I cannot find a thing. The wildlife trust trimmed a lot of the growth back, but still looks OK as habitat. Is it me or is it possible there were only a few animals here in the first place? Anyone got any confirmed sites in Herts for me to go to please??

Gents - most Police forces now have a wildlife liaison officer. Generally one with an enthusiasm for wildlife matters and therefore more likely to take an interest and do the necessary work. Doubtless telling you what you know but it is an offence to trade, sell or otherwise exchange Natrix. It may be difficult to get this man to a prosecution but unless you fear his responses, photograph him and his car if possible. Probably enough in itself to put him off. (There is no offence of photgraphing anyone in the public arena, there is no privacy law) Contact your local force and ask for the wildlife liaison officer and pass on the details. He may already be known and you may be adding to intelligence about him, if nothing else. I'm in Essex, I'll find out for you if you tell me the force area.

Sorry, posted my response to 'gents' forgetting Gemma. Can I suggest caution exchanging site location details on pm. Anyone can register on this site and you could still be taken in. I wouldn't dream to suggest what you do but if I were in your shoes I'd be wanting to meet someone, as a minimum, before revealing a location.

Just for the record I can rarely find the damn things, have to make do with your photos! Occupational size 12's maybe...

When I was 10 years old I knew exactly where to find the Adders and could creep up on them any sunny day. I also knew precisely where to find Slow worms and lizards - guaranteed, every day. My first Grass snake was a tiddler at the foot of a tree, a total chance happening. However, my second wasn't until the age of about 16-17 when I saw what I can only describe as a whopper in Essex. I certainly wouldn't have  picked it up! I've seen 3-4 since but nothing like this one. I went back to looking last year and plan to get out some more this year. I'm ragingly envious of some of the shots on here. Fantastic.

Delighted to chance upon this youngster in the Broads today, crossing a tarmac track. Showed the kids, much to their delight and helped on it's way.

It tried to block my path y'know -had to hold it down with a garden fork! That'll teach it....  actually quite difficult to pick up from a hard path, I had to surround it with my hands and wait for it to lift its head, getting a finger underneath. Really didn't want to hurt it. Makes me wonder what they eat at this size?
