Hi Alan,

I am sure you will understand why I have edited your above post as we are particulary careful not to give too precise a location for some species.

Forum policy can be read at the link below.

Posted: 06 Nov 2003 Topic: Translocating Adder

Posted By: calumma

I have just had an email request from a consultant who would like advice on how to translocate adders. Would anybody like to offer comments? Issues raised by the consultant included:

"Are there any restrictions/licensing issues we need to take into account because the Adder is listed on the Dangerous Wild Animals Act? Could you advise on a good technique for moving Adders?"

Now I have my own personal thoughts on this, but in the spirit of fairness, I wondered if anybody would like to share their (printable) views. I also wanted to catch Tony before his trip Big smile.

Thanks,

Lee

Hi Lee,
You have just caught me.
The consultants comments says it all really, why quote the DWA? Something that is bothering me about consultants is that I am a R&A consultant, I have good knowledge of other creatures but would not take a client with regard to any other than R&A. Unless specialised then this problem should be passed on to someone who knows. I could go on again about lack of coordination etc. I think you should reply Lee and state the basic rules about MITIGATION and how animals such as adders should be dealt with on a local basis.
The other thing is that if the local media get hold of a story of adders beeing moved around then watch out.
In the past we have had headlines such as 'Dangerous snakes moved on to local beauty spot'.
But as far as this particular consultant goes get him to 'see the light'.
Sorry not to reply more fully but have to sort out slides for three presentations.

Tony

John

We do not give out site locations on this forum.

If you are serious may I suggest you join one of your local ARG's.

John I think Stu put the question here because he thought he may have seen a Sand Lizard, though the thread seems to have now moved onto vivi lizard variation, but that's discussion for you!

Perhaps we should start a new thread on the subject in the Common Lizard forum

Estimated 200+ common toads in essex on 16th March. Many in pairs but no toad spawn spotted. 3-4 clumps of newly laid frog spawn but only common frog spotted was in amplexus with a common toad. From observation last season of emerging froglets I would expect a lot more frogs at this site, so maybe for once the toads beat them to it. Should have some pictures of the toads in next few days.

Hi Ajfr0ggy,

The main distinguishing feature between Marsh and Bullfrogs is the presence of a dorsal lateral fold, which is absent in the Bullfrog.

Marsh Frog (Rana ridibunda)

American Bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana)

Hi Matt, great stuff! I was suprised at the number of visble common toads I observed in Essex this week, 200+ in a 20ft stretch of water, quite amazing.

You could preserve picture quality by resizing the pictures to get to the upload limit. Taking them down to 700-800 pixel width will not only reduce the file size but also keep the whole picture in view on most monitors.

See this thread for some tips on how to do this

Adders and dogs = application of common, as Wolfgang and Tony have said keep dog under close control on lead and away from danger areas.

Yes I do have a dog and he does come with me in areas where adder may be present.

It is noted that there is a lot of one-line postings and multiple postings being made.  This fills mailboxes unnecessarily and the forum is being used as a chat room. This is not acceptable and unless it ceases the forum will be closed.
