Good to hear that youÆve fully recovered.

HereÆs a summary of the first aid instructions for snake bite given in the DK First Aid Manual:

À         help the casualty to lie down and call 999,

À         wash the wound,

À         compress the limb above the wound with a roller bandage, but leave the actual wound exposed,

À         immobilise the affected area,

À         keep the heart above the level of the wounded part.

However, on the Web, IÆve read that compressing the limb is inappropriate for adder bite.

Can anyone here confirm this?

Also, (though not really relevant to snake bite in the wilds of the UK) that you shouldnÆt wash the wound if bitten by an unknown snake, since there may be traces of the venom left on the skin which can be analysed to determine the species, and so which anti-venom is to be given.

I hope that this isnÆt going too far off-topic.

Some friends have just moved into house with a small patio that is over run with slug and snails.  Any suggestions for an "eco-friendly" way of limitng their number?

I have just seen this.   I think it is an adder, but I'm no expert.  I'm in San Sebastian, Northern Spain.

Wolfgang, thanks for the confirmation.

For the non-expert how can you tell V. seoanei and V. berus apart?
