Posted: 30 Sep 2010 Topic: COMMoN FROGS

Hi,

I live in Birkenhead (Merseyside) and need some help regarding common frogs. In March I found 15 bits of frog spawn in a puddle in my garden. I am not sure how it got their as looking at Google maps no-body nearby has a pond, and the nearest park is about 1 mile away. I didn't know anybody with a pond so I decided to make up a tank for them. Anyway, they all hatched, some died, some got eaten and I ended up with 2 frogs. When I came to feed them yesterday evening, I found that one had died. I don't know how this could have happened, the water is very clean, it has a pH of 7.3 and there are no other animals in their tank. I check them everytime I go into my kitchen (where they are) and they are always swimming around or sitting on their rocks. They were both fine in the morning and they both get fed every day. I need to know if they can live on their own (happily) or if there is anything I can do. I don't really want to let it go in the park as it is too small and winter is coming. Also, if anybody has any suggestions of what may have killed it I would appreciate it. Thanks for your time.

Kind Regards,

Cobain ;)

Hi,

Hmm, my frog is in a tank with just under 5 inches of water. Would it be better if I were to put it in a smaller tank with only 2-3inches of water and more land space? I have kept newts, lizards, snakes, mantis' and loads of other insects all my life and none have been so difficult to look after. I have done the same for the frogs as I have done for newts, expecting a similar result.

Thanks for your replies.

Hi, Just seen this. I live in Birkenhead and take my dog for walks in Royden Park. There are loads of common lizards there and if you are lucky, you might find some snakes. Great place for toads too! There is a big open heather field, mainly where I find the snakes and lizards, look there on a nice sunny day, you could be in luck!

Yeah, when I was making a tank for them I did design it with slight sandstone slopes, they could easily get in and out, just very confused. I think I will make another tank with less water and more land.

Hi there,

I know that when you replace the water in a fish tank or frog terrarium, you can't just use it straight out the tap because chlorine in the water hurts them. I usually use boiled tap water, but it takes for ever to cool down and I'm left with bowls, pots and pans out all over the house. So I was wondering if I could use 'still table water'. I saw it in sainsburys for 18p for 2l. I don't know what it is, is it like mineral water? Is it safe for fish and frogs?

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the advise, I have got a water butt in my garden, so I'll use that! I'm not keen on the dechlorinators so I tend to steer clear from them! I'll see how it goes and maybe use it again in the future.

Thanks for your help! ;-)

Hi, not sure if this is the place, but these last 4 weeks, my beardie (3 yrs) has suddenly not been eating very well. I can feed her dandelion leaves and the odd locust, but she should be eating 5 locusts every other day. I thought that it may  be down to the sudden weather change? Her tank is warm and nothing has changed.

Hi, I feed her adult locusts. Thats another thing I forgot to add; she hasn't been defecating. I put her in the bath the day before last and she didn't do anything. She usually does, its quite worrying.

Thanks,

Yeah, I have posted something on RFUK, just waiting for a reply. The only problem is that my nearest reptile vet is about 30miles away. The vet near me and the vet for my dog don't go near reptiles which is annoying. I will try putting her in the bath again tomorrow (this usually makes her poo) and go from there. Thanks for your reply!
