Posted: 14 Nov 2003 I currently manage a local nauture reserve where we have recently recorded Great Crested Newts. Would anyone know of where i could obtain a method for the creation of a hibernaculum. I have the English Nature mitigation guidlines where it is mentioned but only briefly. Many thanks Rhys Rhys |

Posted: 14 Nov 2003 Methods I've heard of include log piles, stacks of turf, and piles of stones or rubble. Compost heaps are often incidentally used for hibernation. Froglife's Great Crested Newt Conservation Handbook has loads of information on habitat management for GCNs- it's available for free, details are at: http://www.froglife.fsnet.co.uk/GCN/GCNCC.htm |
