Posted: 15 Mar 2009 It was warm morning with full sunshine here in NE Hants today. At 10am two Grass Snakes were out basking amongst the braken at my local Adder site. These were the first I've seen this year. As is almost always the case when I see a Grass Snake, they disappeared before I could get any photographs. I also saw an Adder and, under felts, two Slow Worms. But as yet, no Common Lizards.

Posted: 19 Mar 2009 Hi Peter I found 3 Grass Snakes also on 15th, NE Surrey. 14th was 1 F 3 M Vb, 3 Slow Worms basking, quite a few common liz. The grass snakes were all close by - within about 10 Sq Ft - I'm guessing a female with two interested males. This one probably being a female?

Posted: 19 Mar 2009 Thanks Tim, just got lucky with this one laying out in a nice spot and allowing me to approach close enough. Normal disappearing trick didn't happen, even though it was pretty late when I found it, 12:30 or there abouts. The other two were off in a flash. Cheers Marsh |

Posted: 20 Mar 2009 After struggling to find 5 adders this morning at Allerthorpe, there was better luck this afternoon when out with Richard Sunter, and 17 grass snakes active in South Yorkshire, 13 of these being within 10 yards of each other. Mating is well underway here. Unfortunately, also came across a dead female (missing head) within a short distance of a dead green woodpecker - cant think of any obvious coincidence there!  Interesting to note that Chris Monk was also out in Derbyshire today and was struggling to find adders in locations where they were plentiful, just days ago. Chris reckons humidity was low today, just over 30%, coupled with a drying breeze, so this may have adversley affected the willingness of adders to show themselves - didnt affect the grassies though!! Posted: 21 Mar 2009 Hi all, an old friend (male) at Holyfield, Broxbourne yesterday, one of only two sightings. Incidentally great pics above, both look like males to me though.
