Posted: 14 Feb 2009 Found the first pair of Common Frogs in amplexus today for this year in my garden pond in Liverpool (appropriate date!), This is several weeks later than in recent winters, but hardly surprising considering we have had no mild spells in the last month, but at least it was 6 degrees today. Posted: 15 Feb 2009 No signs of common frog breeding up in north Cumbria yet . In the past i've seen amplexed pairs up to a month before the first spawn. Paul Hudson |

Posted: 19 Feb 2009 A few frogs spawned in Gateshead on Monday night; a bit later than last year, but the very same date as 2006. The Nature's calendar live map shows very few records so far this year. |

Posted: 19 Feb 2009 OMG a clump of spawn in my pond in East Devon this morning! I take it all back from my post of yesterday. I am so proud I feel I've almost laid it myself! To thwart blackbirds I have put a metal grid over that area of pond. The frogs can still get in and out in other parts of the pond. Suz |

Posted: 27 Feb 2009 Netted my pond for an hour yesterday. Results exceeded even my wildest expectations. 85 common frogs, including 11 pairs in amplexus. 16 smooth newts also - these usually tend to come about a month after the frogs. I know the figure for the frogs is probably 100+, but I had to stop for lunch whilst I could still see them swimming and surfacing. Also, the caught ones were starting to appear stressed. Some just kept evading the net as well. Interestingly found a clump of previously un-noticed and disintengrated (?newts) frogspawn at the bottom of the pond. Since only 11 of 85 were females, I'm guessing more will come later. Reformed Teetotaller |

Posted: 27 Feb 2009 Note the disintegrated spawn in the last pic. I always get this with the first laid clump. Lots of little clumps, instead of one big one. Later laid clumps appear more normal. Newts had their fill by then? Reformed Teetotaller |

Posted: 02 Mar 2009 A little late, as usual here in my top of hill micro-climate in Surrey. First Spawn tonight. Have been watching activity on 'Pond Cam'...amazing activity tonight, compared to earlier in the week, where all the frogs might as well have been Gnome statuettes! One thing..... Leads to another... Posted: 11 Mar 2009 I ended up with 42 clumps. Huge jump from last years 6. Since the pond is now 3 years old, I think all the original batch from 2006 came back this year. Hoping for even more next year, since 2007 was a very good year. Reformed Teetotaller |
