Posted: 01 Jun 2004 has anybody noticed a lack of spawn from especially frogs but also maybe from toads. i have seen hardly any spawn or tadpoles this year. although my main pond has been badly managed the other ponds have been managed correctly and had a large population last year but i have seen very few this year. has any one else noticed this or know why this has happened? mark |

Posted: 02 Jun 2004 We monitor a few ponds each year for spawn and tadpoles in the wider countryside, I've not noticed any problems this year, spawning and surviving tadpoles has been very good. Small garden population can react to very subtle changes and natural fluctuations in population numbers can appear to be a sign of problems. Perhaps keeping a count of spawning adults each year at the pond will give a clearer picture. I hope things are better next year. Gemma Fairchild, Independent Ecological Consultant |
