Posted: 03 Sep 2010 photograph taken early july. doesnt look much does it? yet in springtime this is a spring-fed breeding pond several feet deep on arable farmland in glos. i see good numbers of smooth and crested newts at that time and they have persisted for many years according to the farmer - despite the fact that it dries up completely every summer. he said his sons often find the adults holed-up in the recesses built for water stopcocks during their terrestrial phase. survival of the quickest (to metamorphose) i guess. ben Diversity. |
