Posted: 09 May 2008 I'm a Smoothie - get me out of here! Interestingly, when I was there a couple of years, I saw a Adder do the same sort of thing. Is that a male smoothie? Cheers, Mark Hampshire Amphibian and Reptile Group. |

Posted: 10 May 2008 Cannot really sex them from the view shown, there is such a variability in the markings and colours. One gets used to the slightly yellow, orange or red tinged ones being males but then when surveying you find a few females that have the same colours so I would never identify the sex from anything other than the length and shape of the tail. Ventral colour is also variable with about 1/4 to 1/3 of the specimens showing the opposite of what the majority show. Posted: 10 May 2008 Like Dave says the ones with orange or reddish tinge are usually males, females more greyish. But not set in stone, you really need to see the tail. 'I get my kicks on Route 62' |

Posted: 10 May 2008 True, it's always easier when seen in the flesh so to speak - except when they're extremely bitey like a female I ecountered earlier in the week in Dorset. Tony, Do you still need any pics for your book? Cheers, Mark Hampshire Amphibian and Reptile Group. |

Posted: 10 May 2008 If you mean the adder book then yes need habitat photos from various parts of the country and also Europe inc habitat of V.b.bosniensis. (Dave?) Also any good behaviour shots. Am also tring to source various aerial photos that cover my study areas in Wareham/Purbeck and also Surrey. Contributors would at least get a copy of the book. 'I get my kicks on Route 62' |

Posted: 10 May 2008 Hi Tony, Chris has left, John Wilkinson has replaced him at HCT. Chris was intending doing some independent ecology work to earn some pennies before getting into Humanitarian charity work. That was the plan a few weeks ago. I'm overdue to contact him for a chat/beer. Steve Langham - Chairman Surrey Amphibian & Reptile Group (SARG). |
