I�ve never seen a dead friend before. I wanted presents from lots of you. Snot fair that Ben Rigsby was the only one to send me Xmas & birthday presents.

Maintained large saucepan shaped hole covered with polystyerene box for the second week of the fortnight the pond was covered in thick ice during December. Lots of palmate newts back in pond but can only see 1 live frog this week.

ben rigsby Senior Member Joined: 27 Apr 2010 No. of posts: 337 View other posts by ben rigsby	Posted: 18 Jan 2011 hi, same as during the cold spell last year i broke the ice on my larger pond every day during the snap. as best i could without provoking an inland tsunami and as far as i could reach with a spade. maybe that helped. no mortalities here seen some bloaters in other local ponds though. i couldnt break the ice on the small pond. the waters gone a suspiciously funny colour in that one. like a cowpat with rain gathered on it. but not spotted any dead uns in there yet either. so far. ben Diversity.

Wonder why some die and some don�t. This is so sad. Glad your big pond�s ok Ben. Are you gonna investigate why your small pond has turned to slosh? I wanted presents from lots of you. MORG Member Joined: 13 Aug 2003 No. of posts: 15 View other posts by MORG	Posted: 18 Jan 2011 I have just spotted 1 live frog in my smallest pond Ive no idea how many frogs my garden amphib sanctuary supports in all, and honestly didnt think it was that many frogs I really cant see there being many frog returns now as it looks like almost all decided to overwinter in the ponds rather than the logpiles and specially created underground hibernaculum where they would have been safe from the weather. Thats going to upset the newts as they usually feast on frog tadpole each springtime Morg love punk-hate racism

If it�s scientifically proven that frogs survive the cold better by being out of water should we all be grabbing the things from our ponds and shifting them out in winter? Are they defo more likely to survive by being out or do frogs actually know better? If I were more intelligent and knew more about frogs I�d consider stealing a batch and locking them in a large container with winter food for them so that in spring I could let them out and they�d still be alive. Wish it was as simple as that and I�d way love some pet frogs, I�d even bring them indoors if I could. In winter do frogs actually hibernate and go to sleep or are they just sitting there awake but conserving energy? Glad you�ve got one live frog MORG, hopefully there�s still lots left but hiding that you don�t know about. Does this forum not have a thread to show off everyone�s ponds? I've never seen a dead frog in my pond before - would they always float? It's just one of those things. Very upsetting for folk to have lots of fatalities. Suz

Has anyone ever cleared out a pond before? The old lady that lived at my house before me had to change the pond lining cos the first one was poor quality and leaked. She said she put all the frogs in the wheelie bin whilst doing it, never mentioned dead ones in there. Although the first pond lining may not have been in there all that long anyway. I reckon thats the end of my frogs though with that many found dead Morg love punk-hate racism

No alive frogs though either .So using that principle no smooth snakes under my old fence yet.. 10 degrees today but all ponds I passed whilst putting snake refuges out were all frozen over.
